A place marked by religious revelations
Włoszczowa resisted the reformation movement, as well as other 16th-century religious trends. The citizens claim that, due to this, it has been blessed with revelations of the Virgin Mary and cures received on account of her intercession. Even the war damages and pillage have not weakened this cult.

The history of the revelations
For the time being, the Church of the Virgin Mary’s Assumption in Włoszczowa is the most impressive sacred building in the district. As early as the 16th C., there had already been a Church of St. Jacob the Apostle in here. In the 17th C. Włoszczowa, which got the municipal rights from king Zygmunt Stary (Sigismund I the Old), witnessed a blessing in the form of a revelation of the Virgin Mary accompanied by St. Joseph and St. Joachim. The Mother of God appeared in a humble, uninhabited house near the Square and the phenomenon was followed by several cases of cure. The event was documented, thus, on the basis of witnesses’ testimonies and scrupulous study, the contemporary Primate of Poland Maciej Łupieński gave consent to the foundation of a chapel, where a painting of the Włoszczowa Mother of God was brought in 1646.
